Protocol Labs, the company behind Filecoin, has awarded a research gift to Professor Charalampos Papamanthou. The gift will support research at the Yale Applied Cryptography Laboratory on stateless cryptocurrencies through a cryptographic primitive called “vector commitments”. A vector commitment enables a party to compute a succinct representation of a vector, so that anyone can securely “open” the vector at an arbitrary index, with the help of a short witness. Papamanthou, along with his student Weijie Wang, are studying various properties of vector commitments, such as homomorphism and proof aggregation, and their applications to blockchains and cryptocurrencies.
