Theodore Kim Wins Academy Award

February 9, 2023

Theodore Kim has won a 2022 Scientific and Technical Academy Award, along with David Eberle, Fernando de Goes, and Audrey Wong, for the design and development of Pixar’s Fizt2 (pronounced “fizz-tea-too”) elastic simulation system.

The Academy’s citation says: “Fizt2 provides a high-performance solver with novel and stable implicit physics and robust collision detection. The design of this system enables artist workflows to easily apply soft-body dynamics to a broad range of interacting animated characters and objects.”

This is Professor Kim’s second Academy Award. He previously received one in 2012 for his work on smoke and fire simulation. More details are available in the SEAS article.
